At Coldfall Primary School, we are committed to being actively anti-racist. Our Racial Equity Group is made up of Micah Hylton (PE teacher), Daisy Johns (class teacher), Yasmin Kadir (class teacher) Rhianna Roberts (class teacher), Emily Gazzard (Deputy Head and Racial Equity Lead) and Helen Da Silva (Racial Equity Group governor). We have termly REG parent meetings and termly REG pupil meetings. These meetings provide a safe space for pupils and parents to discuss any concerns they may have around Racial Equity at Coldfall Primary. The school are working hard to address any issues around Racial Equity including attainment of our black and black heritage pupils and the racial literacy of our pupils and staff.

Current priorities include:

• Developing our robust processes for dealing with racist incidents
• Education around boundaries and personal space. Education around specific characteristics such as hair and touching/playing with it
• Education for educators regarding unconscious bias and raising awareness of this
• Ensuring our Coldfall Curriculum reflects our diverse community and celebrates the achievements of a diverse range of individuals
• Ensuring all our pupils make outstanding progress and reach their academic potential

Racist Incidents (taken from Behaviour Policy)

Intent does not supersede impact (Mpula Lawton, ARISE)

1. Racial Equity Group Group Lead is informed (Emily Gazzard).
2. IARG Lead will interview pupils. It will be explained to the ‘wrongdoer’ that their behaviour has been seen as racist.
3. Pupils will be reminded of their Coldfall ‘Give Me 5’ adults they can talk to. Children will be offered support by a member of staff who the child relates to if desired.
4. IARG Lead will contact parents of both parties.
5. IARG Lead will arrange for a restorative meeting with both parties where appropriate.
6. Incidents will be recorded on My Concern.
7. IARG Lead will offer a meeting/phone calls for parents of either party with one of our IARG teachers (Daisy Johns, Rhianna Roberts) or IARG Governor (Helen Da Silva).
8. The incident will be discussed in general terms with the class by a member of the IARG team. The aim of this discussion will be to educate the pupils about the impact of racism. It will not be done as a way of shaming or punishing the pupil involved.
9. Behaviour will be closely monitored.
