Maths at Coldfall

At Coldfall the children are taught using the White Rose maths workbooks and schemes. These are rooted in the mastery principles of the National Curriculum, and designed to give children a deep understanding of mathematical principles, a precise and accurate mathematical vocabulary and a range of highly effective, problem-solving techniques and promote excellent mathematical reasoning.

By effectively using this approach to improve the subject knowledge and pedagogy of teachers we aim to raise standards of teaching and learning, increase children’s confidence and enjoyment and instil firm foundations for them to succeed in maths in the future.

Maths Subject Leader Biograghy

I have been maths co-ordinator at Coldfall for over 10 years. I was not someone who ‘got’ maths at school – the ‘do this, do that and get the right answer’ approach didn’t really work for me at school.

At Coldfall I led the introduction of the mastery approach to maths teaching. This meant a focus on teaching mathematical concepts by using ‘concrete’ objects and drawings to represent numbers and calculations. I found this the most transformative change to maths teaching in my 25 years as a teacher. Deepening the pedagogy of teachers with this approach was most rewarding for me personally.

I am committed to ensuring that children master mathematics and am very aware of the correlation between mathematical confidence and academic success and self-esteem. I want children to love maths, find patterns and use it in science, geography, art and beyond.

Particular skill areas are described as ‘key skills’ because they help learners to improve their learning and performance in education, work and life. These are embedded in the school’s curriculum.
